Celebrity Skincare Secrets – Celebrities are known for having gorgeous skin, but how they attain it isn’t one size fits all. Many celebrities have gone on the record about their favorite skincare tips and products, from brands they use to what they eat. While some tips — like expensive luxury products and weekly facials — might be out of reach for the average consumer, other secrets are within reach, and some don’t cost anything at all. Here are seven celebrity skincare secrets that you need to know:

Makeup Removal

Multiple celebrities have said that they never sleep in their makeup, including Salma Hayek and Sarah Jessica Parker. Other celebrities like Kerry Washington take things a step further and go makeup-free on days when they’re not working or attending events. While skin doesn’t exactly “breathe” the same way our lungs do, wearing comedogenic makeup can clog pores and lead to breakouts, and sleeping in it just increases the risk even further. Try a micellar water for makeup-free days and cleansing balm for a full face of makeup, and then follow it up with a facial cleanser to ensure that you’re removing all traces of makeup.

Regular Exfoliation

Supermodel Christie Brinkley starts every single day by exfoliating her face. While regular exfoliation is a key part of any skincare routine, doing it every day can be a bit much for some people’s skin: Most people find success by using a face exfoliator two to three times a week, so less frequently than Christie Brinkley does. However, some people with very oily skin do benefit from using an exfoliating toner each morning to promote oil control and help their skin look less shiny throughout the day. If you do exfoliate in the morning rather than night, be extra diligent about wearing SPF, since exfoliating makes your skin more vulnerable to sun damage.

Daily Sunscreen

Actor Cate Blanchett swears by using sunscreen every day, ideally an SPF 50. “I’m eternally grateful that my mother always encouraged me to stay out of the sun and wear sunscreen [when I was growing up],” she told Allure. “I think 90 percent of people who have issues with their skin — health-wise and also in terms of satisfaction with their complexion — are actually talking about sun damage.” In fact, wearing sunscreen every day is one of the most evidence-based practices for slowing the signs of aging, and it will make a huge difference in the appearance of your skin over time.

Nightly Retinol

Retinoids and retinols are powerful ingredients that promote skin cell turnover and regeneration, helping to reduce acne blemishes and prevent visible signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. That’s probably why actor Jennifer Lawrence uses a retinol every evening beneath her night cream. While most dermatologists say that prescription strength retinoids shouldn’t be used every night, if you’re using a gentler derivative then you may be okay using it on a daily basis. Try using a retinol some nights and an acid face peel on the others for a truly powerful skincare routine.

Sleeping Enough

One of Jennifer Lopez’ top beauty tips has nothing to do with what products she uses. Instead, she swears by getting enough sleep, ideally 9-10 hours a night whenever possible. Getting enough sleep will help you look more rested, reducing the appearance of dark circles and helping your face to look less puffy. Your skin also regenerates itself when you sleep, building collagen that can help slow visible signs of aging. If you’ve been piling on the skincare products, but skimping on your nightly rest, try devoting more time to sleeping to see if that makes a difference in your appearance.

Healthy Diet

The popular saying “you are what you eat” has some truth to it when it comes to your skin. While scientists are still puzzling out the exact link between gut health and skin health, many people have seen a difference in their skin once they started making dietary changes. Model Olivia Culpo said that her face started to clear up once she cut back on dairy and sugar and started eating more greens instead. High glycemic foods have been known to increase inflammation in the body, which can show up in your face, so it makes sense that cutting back would make a difference in your appearance.

Cosmetic Treatments

If you’re wondering why your anti-aging moisturizer isn’t getting you red carpet-worthy results, it’s because the celebs have some extra help: professional cosmetic treatments in the form of Botox, lasers, and more. While most celebrities pretend that this isn’t the case, a few have publicly admitted it, most notably Cindy Crawford. The supermodel told InStyle UK that “Past a certain age, creams work on the texture of your skin but, in order to restore elasticity, all I can really count on is vitamin injections, botox, and collagen.”

While wearing SPF and exfoliating regularly can make a difference in your skin, if you really want to stop the progression of visible aging in its tracks, you’ll need some help from a certified cosmetic dermatologist or plastic surgeon.
