Blackheads write for us – Blackheads are a type of acne (acne vulgaris). These are open bumps in the skin that fill with excess oil and dead skin. They look like dirt on the bump, but the irregular reflection of light off the clogged follicle actually causes the dark spots.

Blackheads are not pimples. Pimples are small, painful, discoloured bumps with a thick, yellowish-white fluid (pus) at the tip.

Who do Blackheads Affect?

Blackheads usually affect teenagers and young adults who are going through hormonal changes. However, many adults continue to have acne well into their 20s, 30s, and beyond. Some even develop blackheads for the first time in adulthood.

How to Prevent Blackheads?

How to Prevent Blackheads? You can prevent blackheads without spending a lot of money by trying some of the following ideas:

  • Wash regularly

Wash your face when you wake up and before bed to remove oil buildup. Washing more than twice a day can irritate the skin and make acne worse. Use a mild cleanser that won’t redden or irritate the skin. Some acne cleansers contain antibacterial ingredients that kill P. acne bacteria.

Also remember to wash your hair every day, especially if it is oily. Hair oils can help clog pores. It’s also important to wash your face after eating fatty foods like pizza, as the oil from these foods can clog pores.

  • Use oil-free products

Any product that contains oil can contribute to the appearance of new blackheads. Choose oil-free or non-comedogenic makeup, lotions, and sunscreens to prevent your problem from getting worse.

  • Try an exfoliating product

Scrubs and masks remove dead skin cells from the face and can help reduce blackheads. Look for products that don’t irritate your skin.

How are Blackheads Treated?

How are Blackheads Treated?Over-the-counter medications can treat blackheads. These may include:

  • Salicylic acid – is available over the counter for blackheads as a cleanser or lotion. Helps to remove the top layer of damaged skin. Salicylic acid dissolves dead skin cells to prevent hair follicles from clogging.
  • Azelaic acid: Barley, wheat, rye, and other grains naturally contain azelaic acid. Kills microorganisms on the skin and also reduces swelling.
  • Benzoyl Peroxide – Available over the counter (such as Clearasil®, Stridex®, and PanOxyl®) as a gel or leave-in wash. It targets surface bacteria, which often aggravate acne. Lower concentrations and wash-off formulations are less irritating to the skin. Irritation (dryness) is a common side effect.

What Causes Blackheads?

Sebaceous glands are found throughout the body, and most of them connect to hair follicles. Blackheads and whiteheads are comedones (singular comedones). Blackheads are open comedones and whiteheads are closed comedones. Common dones occur when a hair follicle or oil gland becomes inflamed. Inflammation can occur as a result of:

  • Increased production of sebum (oily material produced by the sebaceous gland).
  • Irregular formation of keratin (the protein that helps make hair, skin, and nails).
  • Increase in hormones (androgens).
  • A greater presence of bacteria on the skin that causes acne.

How Common is this Condition?

Blackheads are very common. Some researchers suggest that blackheads affect almost everyone during their lifetime. They are most common in teenagers, but up to 10% to 20% of adults also have blackheads.
